How to Keep an English Conversation Going: Answer, Add, Then Ask

Someone asks, How was your weekend? You say, Good. There is nothing grammatically wrong with that answer, but your partner now has to invent the entire next turn.

To keep a conversation moving, use answer → add → ask. Give a direct answer, offer one detail that is easy to respond to, and ask a relevant question when you want to hand the turn back.

Add a detail, not your whole weekend

Choose one of these instead of reciting everything that happened:

The final example creates an easy opening: What happened next? You do not need to manufacture drama. A small, true observation is more useful than a list of impressive adjectives.

Make the next question belong to this conversation

What about you? works when you genuinely want the same information back. Repeating it after every answer can make the exchange feel like a survey.

A: How was your weekend?

B: Pretty good. I tried a new noodle place near the station. Have you been there?

If the other person says no, add The spicy one is worth trying. You can then let them speak rather than immediately introducing an unrelated topic. The detail offers material; the question offers a turn.

Three rounds beyond “Good”

  1. Answer and add. Respond to three prompts—your weekend, your lunch and your day so far—with two sentences each. Do not ask anything yet.
  2. Add a useful question. Ask only if it grows out of your detail. Otherwise, leave a natural stopping point.
  3. Continue after a reply. Give yourself a response such as Really?, Me too. or No, I haven't. Say one more turn without restarting the topic.

Record the exchange and check two things: could the listener find something to respond to, and did your question follow what had just been said? Longer is not automatically better.

Practise your next real answer

In MirrorSay, say your own answer and detail, compare the natural version, listen and shadow it. Keep your actual noodle place, rainy walk or busy morning rather than replacing your life with a model weekend.

If your questions start sounding like an interview, practise choosing a detail for a follow-up question. If you understand the question but lose the thread when the reply arrives, try listening and continuation practice.
